Artificial Intelligence

Do you want to ride a self-driving car, or have a little robot servant order your takeout with just one command? Well, with advances in technology rising more than half its percent yearly, it is sure to make many of these little hacks a part of your daily life! Even though the car and robot appliances already is in process, all of that still needs time to go through testing until it’s 100 percent suitable for humans. But what truly needs to be tested is the AI controlling these machines. Artificial Intelligence, or Al for short, is a special type of programming that is used to power many of our tools, which you might not realize. Despite AI’s advantages designed for humankind, there are many disadvantages that are a possibility.

This intelligence is also used to develop tools varying in transportation, hospitals, and other basic things. For example, the self-driving car mentioned earlier is already on the streets, without you even knowing there might be one when you’re in the passenger’s seat. This is obviously a huge advantage for us! With self-driving cars, people are able to experience less car accidents, decrease the chances of drunk driving, maneuver around cities in a more efficient way and not have to worry about the hassle of operating a vehicle. This car will clearly help the elderly or disabled more, children who go to school, or just as a simple taxi. In hospitals, there could, and will, be robots that aid in transferring patients to rooms, robot nurses, self-heart monitors and stuff, and that is just scratching the surface of what could be used as help. Now, a little robot for yourself would be nice. And this little guy can be your phone, camera, personal Siri, speaker, and much more. As of now, it’s becoming real, and might be on the shelves soon. There are many videos promoting these new robots in different models, where they could be connected to your house and can turn on the lights when you get home. They also serve as a phone, where you can call a relative or Frank the pizza guy, and possibly FaceTime them too. These guys probably don’t walk yet, but I bet in about 5 years from now they’re gonna.

Similar to the movie Chappie, AI’s true form will be similar to how people believe a robot might look like. Today, many engineers, technicians, and just computer dudes are working on trying to perfect their own robot. For example, Boston Dynamics posted a Youtube video earlier this year about their new robot who has the ability to move on its own. The mobility of their robot has increased due to the fact that it’s power is generated by batteries, not the common cables that limit its access to certain places. Now, they’ve also given this robot the ability to roam, pick up and place objects, and literally jump right back up like a ninja when it falls. In the video, they show how the robot uses its abilities to open the door on its own and just walk out into the forest, being followed by its cameraman. As of today’s social media, everybody commented on how the robots are finally “evolving” and that they would use this video as evidence to sue the humans (because it also shows a guy who pushes, or bullies, the robot onto the ground to show its response to falling). A big fear of the media today, based on AI, is that we’re going to end up in a fictional world similar to the Terminator, where humans are under the control of soul-less killing machines. “Last week, footage of the new Atlas taking a stroll through the woods and getting teased by his handlers went viral, garnering thousands of views over the weekend and stirring up humans like a hive of bees. Now the running Internet joke is the company has taken the world one step closer to Skynet’s Judgement Day” (Barnwell). Even though it’s not a possible apocalypse in this century, maybe, it’s possible that our robots will become more human with time.

So Artificial Intelligence is a major role that will take place in the future, that is not too far from today. It will aid those in need, and just be there for when we require its services. And it will also bring a new “race” of smart intellectuals, called robots, that should be able to comply with our standards of life, and hopefully rule in our governments to a better future. Of course it might sound ridiculous, but it’s possible, because we would have to live among the artificial humans. And another question in this world is, will this “person” be able to think, feel, and love like us? Just like with everything, time will tell, but based on our plans for a future, is that what’s really going to happen?
